Your primary category decides which searches you are allowed to appear in
A profile with 200 reviews in the wrong category loses the map pack to one with eleven in the right one. We spent longer on this single field last week than on the rest of a client's profile combined.

- DecidesWhether you appear at all
Open your Google Business Profile and look at the primary category. It is a filter, not a label: it decides which searches you are eligible for at all, before anything else about you is considered. Everything else on the profile only ranks you inside the set it lets you into.
We set up a Google Business Profile for a client last week. Photos, hours, description, services, the whole thing. The field that took the longest was one dropdown.
Owners treat the category as a description of the business. Google treats it as a gate. When somebody searches plumber near me, Google first assembles the set of profiles whose category makes them a candidate, and only then sorts that set by distance, prominence and relevance. If your primary category is not in the candidate set, your reviews are not losing to their reviews. You were never in the comparison.
How to pick it, without guessing
- Write down the exact phrase you want to be found for. Not your industry — the words a customer types when they are ready to spend.
- Search that phrase in Google Maps from a location in your service area.
- Open the top three profiles. The grey text under each business name is the primary category. That is what Google considers the right answer to that phrase.
- If yours is different, yours is wrong for that search. Change it, or accept that you are competing for something else.
This is a five-minute check and it is the only one that tells you the truth, because it reads Google's own answer instead of your opinion of your business.
Secondary categories are cheap, but not free
You get one primary and up to nine additional. Additional categories add eligibility for more searches, and they carry noticeably less weight than the primary one.
Add the ones you genuinely do. Do not fill all nine. A profile listing everything adjacent reads as low-confidence to the ranking system and, worse, invites a competitor to report it. Three or four honest ones beats nine hopeful ones.
The three other fields that gate you
- Address versus service area. If customers do not come to you, hide the address and set a service area. A storefront address you do not actually staff is the most common cause of a profile being suspended, and a hidden address does not hurt you.
- Hours, completely. Blank or wrong hours take you out of the open now filter, which is a large share of mobile local searches. Add the holiday hours too — Google prompts you and most people dismiss it.
- Services. Each one you list is a plain sentence about what you do, attached to a verified business entity. That is the exact shape of thing an AI answer will happily repeat about you.
What it is costing you while it is wrong
On a phone, the map pack is three results and it sits above the organic list. Being in the wrong category does not mean placing fourth. It means not being rendered on the screen the customer is looking at, for every search you were built to win, on every day the field stays wrong.
Then make sure the name and phone on that profile match the ones on your website exactly — they usually do not.
